Breast Lift Surgery – Procedure & Recovery
News
An Overview:
A breast lift, also called mastopexy, is a surgical procedure performed by an experienced plastic surgeon to redefine your breasts’ shape. In a breast lift, the surgeon removes excess skin and strengthens the breast tissue to raise them into symmetric, uplifted, youthful breasts.
Breast sagging is caused due to weight fluctuations, pregnancy, age, or other influencing factors. You can choose breast lift if your breasts droop or your nipples point downward. In addition, breast lift surgery can boost your self-image and self-confidence.
A breast lift does not change the breast size but reshapes and repositions them. However, a breast lift can be done in conjugation with breast augmentation or breast reduction, according to the individual’s expectations.
Why consider a breast lift?
You might consider a breast lift if:
- Your breasts have laxity, and they have lost shape or volume
- Your breasts seem flat
- Your nipples and areolae point downward
- Your areolae have stretched
- The two breasts have lost proportion
- Your breasts’ skin has lost youthfulness and suppleness
Breast lift procedure:
Breast lift is a day procedure carried out under anaesthesia. The procedure starts by making an incision around the nipple-areolar complex (NAC) and then dropping the incision vertically down to the breast line crease in a lollipop shape.
Dr Rory can also choose to access breast tissue with an inverted T or anchor shape incision, depending on how much surgery is needed and how the breast tissues are accessed for reduction and lift.
Once the breast tissues are tightened and uplifted, and the nipples are repositioned facing outwards, the incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures.
Aftercare and Recovery
The surgery can be conducted as day surgery. After a breast lift, the breasts are wrapped in gauze and a surgical support bra. Dr Rory might attach small tubes called cannulas at the incision sites to drain any excess blood or fluid accumulation.
There will be some swelling and bruising in the breasts for about two weeks, which will subside eventually. Meanwhile, you may feel mild pain, soreness, and tenderness around the incisions. You may also notice red or pink bruising for a few months. Numbness around NAC and breast skin may last for up to six weeks.
Dr Rory will prescribe anti-pain medications and antibiotics for faster healing of incisions. You will be instructed to take medications timely and avoid straining, bending, and lifting activities. Also, you have to sleep on your back to keep pressure off your breasts.
What to expect from the procedure?
Your breast will need some time to change, settle and show results. However, noticeable results will be visible over the next few months.
Initially, the scars will turn red to pink, and the breasts will be tender and lumpy. The scars will soften and disappear in a few months. Dr Rory devises incisions subtly so that the breast lift scars remain hidden in garments or natural breast creases.
After a few months, you will notice breasts becoming firmer and rounder.
Also, the breast lift results are not permanent and may change with changes in the body like weight gain, subsequent pregnancy and ageing. But the benefits of breast lift surgery outweigh these limitations, which is why breast lift is a highly demanded plastic surgery among post-pregnancy and higher-age women in Dubai.
