When skin tone darkens it is the result of an increased production of the skin pigment called melanin, produced by cells known as melanocytes.
This is called hyperpigmentation and is a common condition that effects individuals of all skin types.
Factors which can exacerbate this include excessive sun exposure, pregnancy, skin injuries as well as a number of medical conditions and medications. It can also occur with a genetic predeiposition in areas such as the under eye region.

Hyperpigmentation can be notoriously difficult to treat. Prevention is always crucial in all skin regions and as such high Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is advised. Underlying medical conditions or drug related hyperpigmentation must be excluded.
Approaches to reduce established hyperpigmentation include topical creams and skin surface treatments. After your consultation with Dr Rory, you will be advised as to the most appropriate treatment which often involves combination treatment.
