Acne Scars

Acne scars are the result of inflammation that exists when there has been a previous acne breakout.

The blocked pores that occur during this breakout can burst which leaves normally no visible scar. When these pores are larger or there is significant inflammation they can burst leaving areas that are healed by the production of collagen.

Acne Scars

Acne scars are the result of inflammation that exists when there has been a previous acne breakout.

The blocked pores that occur during this breakout can burst which leaves normally no visible scar. When these pores are larger or there is significant inflammation they can burst leaving areas that are healed by the production of collagen.

This production of collagen is seen as the characteristic acne scars that fall into 3 main groups:

  • Ice pick scars; small deep holes
  • Box-car scars; depressed areas with steep sides
  • Rolling scars; undulating smooth scars

These 3 types of scars are referred to as atrophic acne scars and can occur in isolation or more commonly in combination.

The treatment of these atrophic acne scars is complex and takes time and repeated treatments.

It can involve surgical as well as non-surgical approaches. Acne surgical approaches include subcision and punch excision. The non-surgical approaches include resurfacing the skin, dermal filler treatment and microneedling.
